Men's Shed

/

Welcome to The Ferny Grove Men's Shed.

The Ferny Grove Men’s Shed is located within the grounds of the Brisbane Tramway Museum at Ferny Grove. Meetings are held at the museum on Tuesdays with the site open from 8am to 4pm.

The Men’s Shed is affiliated with the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA). Our Shed is a shed with a difference, as the volunteers are all involved in the vital and necessary activities to build, maintain, and operate the Brisbane Tramway Museum. The type of activities engaged in by the Men’s Shed is varied and depends upon what is on the program at the time.

The one annual membership fee covers membership of both the Men’s Shed and the Tramway Museum. Concession Membership is available. There is no daily attendance fee but you are expected to work for a certain of amount of time on Museum projects.

A fully equipped meal room is provided and parking is available within the grounds. Tea and coffee is provided.

Due to the different type of work undertaken by the volunteers, and that the workshop areas are in essence an industrial type work area, there is site orientation and safety induction training.

The museum is owned and operated by The Brisbane Tramway Museum Society, a Not for Profit, Australian Public Company, Limited by Guarantee. The museum is being built, maintained and operated solely by volunteers.

At selected times during the year, Men’s Shed members have the opportunity to drive a tram under the direct “one on one” supervision of a qualified Senior Tram Driver.

To drive trams and carry passengers in traffic it is necessary to undertake the full training course and examination to qualify firstly as a tram conductor and then as a tram driver. You will also need to meet certain medical fitness requirements and you must hold a Queensland Drivers Licence before commencing training.

“But I don’t know anything about trams...?”

No previous skills are necessary to become a member of the Shed. We will teach you the necessary work methods and practices to participate. If you don’t wish to work on the trams, there are many other types of work around the museum.

Activities might include:

> General maintenance of the Museum grounds and buildings.

> Restoration and general maintenance of the tram and trolley bus fleet.

> Archivist activities – Cataloguing, digitising, and preserving tramway plans, drawings, documents, and photographs.

> Restoring historic items and equipment used in Museum displays.

> Establishing new displays and maintaining existing displays.

> Restoring and maintaining the Museum’s fleet of road vehicles.

> Restoration and general maintenance of the tramway infrastructure, which includes the track and overhead (A current electrical trade certificate is required for all electrical work at the Museum).

The TRAMS Group also supports and assists the Operational (Traffic) section of the Museum. This includes helping as a sales attendant in the gift shop, tram crew, or a tour guide.
